It’s About How You Live

Hospice care assists with issues of life review, life completion and life closure, and extends support beyond the life span of the patient to assist the family in their bereavement.

Volunteer Services

Volunteer

Volunteers are special people with a nobility of character and a gentleness of soul that makes them a very special part of Hospice of Miami County. They are “someone like me” to the patient and family – a listening ear, a friendly visitor, a fresh perspective – in a difficult time.

Volunteers are divided into two main categories: caregiving and program support. Caregiving volunteers have direct contact with patients and families. They may perform tasks such as sitting with the patient, delivering medications and equipment to patient’s homes, running errands or doing light housekeeping tasks. Program support volunteers perform clerical and administrative tasks at the hospice office and participate in special events and projects. All Volunteers choose the amount of time they wish to give and have plenty of flexibility in scheduling and choice of tasks.

Hospice volunteer training consists of a basic 8 to 10 hour program with sessions being held once a week for four weeks. Volunteers wishing to assist with grief support activities require an additional 8 hours of bereavement training. Volunteer training is held at various times throughout the year.

Bereavement Volunteers provide assistance with various daytime and evening programs/activities offered by the Generations of Life Community Bereavement Resource Center, a service of Hospice of Miami County. As mentioned above, after receiving specialized Bereavement training (in addition to the Volunteer training), these volunteers can choose to serve in any of several areas including, but not limited to: 1)Visiting bereaved clients (home or facility visits); 2) Assisting with weekly Children or Teen Support groups held in the evenings; 3) Serving at special events (Health fairs, Riverwalk, Butterfly Service); 4) Providing food or light refreshments for Generations of Life events.
